Quick Answer

Transport Services Tasmania owns licence conversion and vehicle registration. An interstate or New Zealand licence follows one conversion route; an overseas licence follows another. A vehicle brought from interstate generally needs Tasmanian registration after three months, with limited published exceptions.

If You Hold An Interstate Or New Zealand Licence

Convert a current licence at Service Tasmania. Bring the existing licence and full identity evidence, including proof of the current Tasmanian residential address. Complete the application, provide a medical certificate if applicable, pay any applicable fee, and have the photo and signature recorded. A temporary licence is issued before the photo card arrives.

The interstate and New Zealand conversion process covers a current licence or one held within the last five years where Tasmanian age and experience requirements for the class are met. Learner, provisional and motorcycle licences have separate conditions.

The checked official page does not state one universal new-resident transfer deadline. Use the live page or contact Service Tasmania for the timing that applies to your status.

If You Hold An Overseas Licence

Take full identity evidence, the overseas licence and application to Service Tasmania. If needed, also take an international driving permit or accepted English translation. If the physical licence is unavailable, Transport Services requires written evidence from the issuing authority or its consulate.

The overseas licence conversion process separates recognised and other routes. A current recognised-country licence may qualify for conversion without the road-rules knowledge test or driving assessment. A non-recognised or non-current licence can require the Tasmanian road-rules knowledge test, car hazard-perception test and practical driving assessment. Overseas heavy-vehicle licences are not eligible for recognition.

Use the live country information rather than an old copied list.

If You Bring Or Buy A Vehicle

An interstate-registered vehicle can generally be used in Tasmania for three months. After that, it needs Tasmanian registration unless a published interstate-resident or non-commercial exception applies.

For Tasmanian registration:

  1. Arrange an inspection with an Approved Inspection Station. An interstate inspection is not accepted for this purpose.
  2. Use the interstate vehicle transfer process and confirm the current checklist. The Tasmanian inspection report is valid for 30 days under the checked guidance.
  3. Take the passed report, proof of ownership or entitlement, interstate plates, identity evidence, proof of the Tasmanian garage address and applicable payment or concession evidence to Service Tasmania.

A person who acquires a Tasmanian-registered vehicle generally has 14 days to complete the transfer. Imported, modified, heavy and non-standard vehicles need their relevant standards or approval route before ordinary registration. The standard registration process explains the current transaction.
