Quick Answer
Service SA handles South Australian licence and vehicle transactions. A new resident generally has three months to transfer an interstate licence. A permanent resident transferring an overseas licence also has a three-month route, while visitors and temporary residents follow different rules. A vehicle transfer is a separate transaction with its own timing and inspection branch.
If You Hold An Interstate Licence
Apply within three months of moving to South Australia. Take the interstate licence card, completed licence application and required identity evidence to a Service SA centre. A medical certificate may be needed where a medical condition affects driving.
The interstate licence transfer process explains the current evidence and exceptions. Service SA records a photo and issues a temporary authority before the new card arrives.
Learner, provisional, motorcycle, heavy-vehicle, expired and conditioned licences need the matching exception on the official page.
If You Hold An Overseas Licence
Do not use the interstate process. A permanent resident must generally obtain the South Australian licence or permit within three months; the rules for driving with an overseas licence explain how visitor and temporary-status branches differ.
Start with the current overseas licence transfer process. The issuing country and licence status determine the evidence, tests and steps. Take the original licence and required identity and residency evidence. If the licence is not in English, provide an accepted official translation.
Until transfer, a qualifying overseas driver must carry the current overseas licence plus the translation or international driving permit required for that licence. Use the live Service SA questionnaire rather than an old recognised-country list.
If You Bring Or Buy A Vehicle
Choose the vehicle branch before arranging an inspection:
- Vehicle already registered interstate and moved with its owner: South Australia recognises the interstate registration for up to 90 days. Prepare the registration and compulsory third-party insurance application, the SA licence or accepted identity evidence, and the interstate registration certificate showing the applicant as the registered operator.
- Interstate registration expired for more than three months or operator changing: an identity inspection is required.
- Vehicle bought interstate: complete the identity inspection before SA registration.
- Vehicle already registered in South Australia: the buyer generally has 14 days to complete the SA registration transfer.
- Imported or modified vehicle: use the separate approval and inspection route before ordinary registration.
The interstate-registered vehicle process sets out the current evidence. Complete the applicable inspection first, then take the forms and ownership evidence to Service SA and pay the registration, insurance and duty amounts for that transaction.
For an overseas vehicle, follow the importing motor vehicles process. An import approval does not remove later South Australian standards or registration requirements.
Does The Adelaide Move Need A Car?
Use Moving to Adelaide to compare the actual work, study, school and appointment trips with transport and parking. Add purchase or freight, registration, insurance, fuel, maintenance and parking before deciding that a car improves the move.
Exceptions And Help
If the owner name, vehicle details, plate status, licence class or inspection category does not match the ordinary route, contact Service SA on 13 10 84 before attending. Do not assume an interstate roadworthy or identity inspection replaces the South Australian requirement.
Driving in Australia explains the national context. The South Australia moving guide connects these transactions to renting, schools and arrival planning.
